This handsome genial giant almost became extinct during world war II. But ardent fans, had developed the breed which may not be suited for City life due to its great size. It is a great swimmer and can paddle in the water in the coldest weather. It is a good companion dog. It is believed to have been created by Alderman Heinrich Essig who wanted to produce a dog resembling a lion. He used the Landseer, the Newfoundland, St. Benard and Pyreneal mountain dog to create this distinguished breed. It weighs 34-50 kgs and is 65-80 cms tall.
